There’s something truly glamorous about mushrooms. They support the forest ecosystem and many mushroom species have incredible nutritional and therapeutic benefits.
For thousands of years, therapeutic mushrooms have been used by traditional healers to increase quality of life and wellbeing. Chaga, reishi, and shiitake mushrooms have specifically been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) to aid the immune system and promote long-lasting vitality.
This crisp, chilly season, we’re brewing up warm and comforting drinks left and right. To enjoy the powerful, enchanting properties of mushrooms, we’ve come up with a vegan chaga latte that supports our stress response, balances our energy levels, and is the ideal belly-warmer to share at any upcoming Friendsgiving gatherings.
Chaga (Inonotus obliquus)
“Cinder conk.” This unassuming health booster is the perfect addition to your Fall wellness routine. Chaga mushrooms carry the gift of regulating and maintaining a sturdy immune response. Its plentiful antioxidants provide stress support and the ability to invoke the power of calm without decreasing energy levels. Chaga mushrooms taste slightly earthy/woody with sweet undertones.
*Since chaga mushrooms are at risk of being overharvested in the wild, it’s highly important to source sustainably harvested chaga when searching for a product. This ethical and sustainable practice keeps the wild populations safe from becoming endangered.
Reishi (Ganoderma lucidum)
Lingzhi or “Mushroom of Immortality.” Reishi mushrooms are held in high regard after centuries of use as a health preserver and way to encourage longevity. Since they’re considered adaptogenic, reishi mushrooms work with our stress response creating resilience in stressful situations, and maintaining steady energetic vibrations. Reishi mushrooms taste earthy and slightly bitter.
Shiitake (Lentinula edodes)
“Elixir of Life.” A culinary treat, shiitake mushrooms are also considered therapeutic in more ways than one. Since these mushrooms also host the immune-regulating sugars that are found in chaga and reishi, they’re the perfect addition to any autumn drink. How to Make a Chaga Latte with Myco Magic
We consider ourselves lucky to be able to include these wondrous, nutritive mushrooms in any drink we want. From powders to tinctures, mushroom-love takes many forms.
When using quality mushroom products, we find it highly important to make sure they contain the above-ground part of the mushroom, or “fruiting body.” This is the section that contains most of the health-boosting benefits. Enjoy this vegan chaga latte on a brisk walk, or serve in a big batch to guests during Friendsgiving!
1/2 cup water
1 cup plant-based milk
2 teaspoons Make & Mary’s The Empress Tea loose-leaf blend
1 Tablespoon Anima Mundi Adaptogenic Mushroom Mocha Milk
¼ teaspoon cinnamon (Cinnamomum verum)
1 teaspoon maple syrup (or sweetener of choice to taste)
1 dropperful Myco Magic | Dual Extracted Mushroom Tincture
A sprinkle of nutmeg, to garnish
- Combine the water and milk in a small saucepan over medium heat. Bring to a low simmer, then remove from heat, add the Empress Tea loose-leaf blend, and steep for 20 to 30 minutes, covered.
- Strain the herbs from the milk and return the infused tea to the cleaned saucepan.
- Reheat the infused milk over low heat until warm, whisking in the Anima Mundi Adaptogenic Mushroom Mocha Milk and cinnamon until fully blended.
- Transfer to a blender or food processor and add sweetener and Make & Mary Myco Magic | Dual Extracted Mushroom Tincture.
- Blend on high for 30 seconds to 1 minute, or until the blend is frothy. (If you don’t want a frothy latte, then you can skip the blender and add the sweetener and tincture directly to your mug.)
- Pour into a mug, top with a sprinkling of nutmeg, and enjoy!
Pro tips: If you purchase your own mushroom powder, be aware of the mushroom part the company uses for their powder or extract. Instead of “mycelial or mycelium biomass,” look for “fruiting body” on the packaging to get the highest-quality health benefits.
To add a little extra jazz to your chaga latte, you can create your own simple syrup from tea and add in fun flavors like peppermint, orange, and rose.
