Natural Dying with Chloë Hight

Learn the art of Natural Dying using local urban botanicals as our medium. We will experiment with hemp flower as well to create beautiful scarves made of silk and cotton. Students will learn to extract dye from plants, barks, flowers, and weeds found throughout the city. We will use non-toxic material, plant & animal fibers (cotton, wool, silk) to create a booklet of swatches and samples, and students will leave with 2 finished textiles and a swatch book.

About Chloë Chloë holds a BFA from Emily Carr University of Art + Design in Vancouver, British Columbia Canada and currently works as a visual and teaching artist in Portland, Oregon. Growing up in the Columbia River Gorge, Chloë spent her childhood exploring the vast evergreen forests and winding river’s edge. These immersive outdoor experiences are some of the most profound of her life and have taught her different ways of knowing and building a reciprocal relationship with place. In her work as an artist and educator, Chloë explores the stories of place through process and the act of making by hand. She practices a variety of techniques such as textile weaving, plant dyeing, basketry, and paper-making. Chloë’s work is deeply influenced and inspired by her mentors, teachers, and community, including EartHand Gleaner’s Society, Wildcraft Studio School, Rewild Portland, Arts in Education of the Gorge, Young Audiences, The Right Brain Initiative, and many more.
