So, What is a Moon Milk?
Moon milk is traditionally warm milk that is served to help calm, and soothe the nervous system while winding down for the evening. They are infused with herbs that have healing properties that are called in while winding down. The warmth of the milk helps to calm and warm you from the inside as you begin to fall asleep.
The tradition of drinking a moon is an ancient Ayurvedic practice. Ayurveda is a traditional form of Indian medicine. When making moon milk, Ayurvedic spices are infused to help with a variety of ailments. These spices are used to boost immunity, calm the nervous system, and promote digestion and stomach health. Moon milk is typically made and consumed in the evening, right before bed due to its relaxing properties. However, if you need to relax earlier in the day, they can bring you into the present and soothe you at any time.
The moon milk we have created incorporates the herbs from our Empress Tea. Let's take a look at a few of these herbs and how they can promote calm and women's wellness.
Moon Milk Benefits
Our moon milk is infused with the following herbs that promote calm and relaxation:
- Raspberry Leaf
- Chamomile

- Hops
- Lavender
- Hemp
All of these herbs have soothing and healing properties that can aid in bringing calm when you need it most. Especially for women during their menstrual cycle. Raspberry leaf helps to reduce cramps and heavy bleeding. Chamomile and hops help to reduce spams that may cause pain. Both of these herbs also help to relax and aid in you falling asleep. Peppermint is soothing and relaxing while helps to prevent the formation of excess gas in the digestive tract.
Lavender, which is common in a lot of moon milk, helps to relax and reduce headaches and anxiety. Lavender is common in moon milk due to its relaxing properties. Because of these relaxing properties, moon milk is made in the evening right before bed.
Rose is another important herb found in our tea that gets infused into the moon milk. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, rose is used to regulate the life energy, qi. Drinking rose in moon milk helps to aid in digestive problems ease stomach pains and cramps, and improve sleep.
One of the most important herbs that we infuse in our moon milk is hemp. Hemp is used in a variety of different ways to soothe pain, promote sleep, and mellow mood energy. Women benefit from these properties when drinking our moon milk during their menstrual cycle to help ease the pain that comes up. The Empress Tea used to make this moon milk contains 500mg of hemp flower, which of course, is 100% organic.
Making This Wonderful Drink
The process of making moon milk is similar to a tea latte. To make this moon milk recipe, first, you need to boil a cup of water. Then take one heaping teaspoon of Empress Tea, and let it steep in the water for 5 minutes. While the tea is steeping, prep the milk of your choice. We prefer to use coconut milk since it compliments the flavor of the tea nicely and gives a silky smooth texture. Heat a cup of coconut milk gently on the stove to just a little more than lukewarm. You don't want the milk too hot, just warm enough. Once the milk is heated and the tea has been steeped, mix the two together. Top off with a teaspoon of honey or sweetener.
The Ritual
Now that you know the benefits of moon milk and how to make one, it's time to work the milk into your evening ritual. Making your moon milk in the evening is a good way to begin the winding down process. After you have made your moon milk, it's time to spend some time reflecting on the day and coming into the present moment. I like to give gratitude for the healing properties of the herbs in the drink and begin my reflection.
While drinking your moon milk, pause, connect and drop into the present. I sometimes incorporate meditation or breathwork into my wind-down process. If you are sharing this space with a loved one, invite them into your ritual and your prayer. Make them moon milk as well (even men can benefit from the herbs and their healing properties). It's a good time to connect with yourself or your loved one to reflect and pray on the day.
When practicing herbal plant medicine, it is recommended that we take time to connect with the herbs. We realize that not only do we receive the benefits physically, but also on a spiritual level. Therefore while drinking moon milk, allow yourself to become familiar with the plants and herbs. Connect with them and thank them for their healing properties. Allow yourself to drop in, light a candle and get cozy with a cup of moon milk, taking a few deep breaths in between each and every sip, being present with the plants and the moment.
